Libya confirms first coronavirus case

Health authorities in have confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in the country.

Ehmed Ben Omar, the health minister of the government of national accord (GNA), confirmed Libya’s “first contamination” in a brief statement on Tuesday.

“The necessary measures have been taken to treat [the patient],” Ben Omar said.

The patient was identified as a 73-year-old man who had returned from a trip to Saudi Arabia on March 5. Now he is receiving medical treatment in isolation at a healthcare facility in Tripoli.

More than 425,000 people worldwide have been diagnosed with coronavirus.  109,000 have recovered and almost 19,000 have died, according to data by the US-based Johns Hopkins University.
