eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has declared a state of emergency and ordered the disaster management teams to be on high alert as severe downpours being battered the city since it had started on Tuesday, February 18.
“The situation warrants that our disaster management teams must ready themselves to respond with speed in the event their services are required anywhere in the city. We are also calling upon the public to work with us by heeding our warnings. Everyone should be mindful that we are a city that is prone to disasters, largely caused by heavy rains,” said Kaunda.
The special disaster crews were deployed on Tuesday by the order of the department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs to be ready to address the consequences of severe downpour and possible flooding.
The municipality reported that according to meteorologists the wet weather expected to clear on Thursday.
Mayor has also asked motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
