EU to put an end to Libya’s arms flow

A new maritime effort will be set up by the European Union to see through the U.N. arms embargo imposed around Libya.

“We agreed to launch a new operation in the Mediterranean and Operation Sophia will be closed,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.

Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn highlighted the importance of implementing the embargo.

“If there are no weapons, there’s no war. There are thousands of thousands of weapons in Libya,” Asselborn said. “We in Europe are the ones who will suffer if anarchy spreads in Libya.“

Libya has been torn by the conflicts since 2011, when a civil war broke and had Muammar Gaddafi overthrowned and later murdered.
