Central African Republic: peace returns to Birao

The United Nations Mission (Minusca) used French fighter planes over the weekend to demonstrate force over Birao, northeast, to deter an offensive by an armed group.

It was the Popular Front for the Renaissance of the Central African Republic (FPRC) which launched an offensive on Birao. This city held by the Central African Liberators for Justice Movement (MLCJ), another militia, is the scene of regular clashes between these two movements signatory to the peace agreement in Khartoum, a year ago, between fourteen groups armed and the government.

To date, clashes between the FPRC and the MLCJ in Birao have stopped and calm has returned. “Minusca called on the French armed forces in the framework of resolution 2499,” said Minusca spokesman Vladimir Monteiro.
