Stones have been thrown at a police officer who lately been shot in a clash with taxi service workers erupted at a taxi rank in eMbalenhle, Mpumalanga. There were, in addition, reports about three people who have apparently been shot and killed by the police during the incident.
The conflict broke out on Tuesday, February 11, and 29 people were arrested for the unrest.
An initial police report indicates that the officers arrived at the taxi rank on Tuesday to cordon off the area and conduct a search operation. A day before the police department had been alerted of an alleged shooting at the taxi rank.
Upon arrival, the law enforcers were barred from carrying out the operation. The taxi drivers used hijacked six trucks, one of them carrying chemicals, to barricade main entrances and exit points in the area.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said that 29 people were arrested and charged with attempted murder, public violence and malicious damage to property.
The detainees were supposed to make a court appearance on Friday.
