A 3-year-old girl and her 22-year-old mother were brutally assaulted by the woman’s boyfriend with whom she lived in their house in at Esigangeni in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, in December 2019. A month later, the police finally traced and arrested the murderer in Verulam.
“It is alleged that on December 10, 2019, a 22-year-old woman, her child and her boyfriend were at their place of residence when an argument occurred. The boyfriend became violent and assaulted the woman. He then slammed the 3-year-old child numerous times on the floor. Even though the mother was crying and pleading for him to stop, he continued assaulting his stepchild with no remorse until the child was unconscious. He left the house immediately after the incident,” police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker told the media.
The critically injured little girl and her mother were rushed to a local hospital in ICU. However, the medics had been unable to resuscitate the minor and she passed away.
The police arrived at the suspect’s new home at Cottonlands in Verulam on Monday at around 3am and apprehended him.
In his official confession to the police, the offender insisted he had been completely drunk and unable to control his behaviour when he had assaulted the victims.
The charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm are to be laid against him in the Nongoma Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
