The industrial area of Bahri, north of the Sudanese capital Khartoum, rocked from huge explosions on Tuesday morning. The consequent fire engulfed the Sella ceramic factory and the nearby buildings killing many workers right on the spot.
According to the local authorities, the accident occurred as a gas tanker exploded while unloading its shipment at the factory. The blast was so strong that it blew the tanker into a nearby lot.
Soon after, the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD) declared a citywide emergency. Mass evacuations were carried out but the number of victims can still increase. At the moment, 26 people are reported dead and 46 more injured. The casualties include employees of various nationalities including some from Asian countries.
The CCSD has urged all doctors in the area to report to the local hospitals to assist with the treatment of the casualties of “varying severity”and a“large number of critical cases.”
