A packed courtroom has met for the first time a man suspected of raping and murdering 21-year-old Capricon TVET College student Precious Ramabulana. The police arrested 28-year-old Aubrey Manaka last week after the victim’s phone had been found among his personal belongings. The man was charged with murder, rape, robbery with intent to commit rape, and aggravated robbery.
It was also reported that another rape case had been brought against the suspect earlier. The police comment on this as follows:
“We cannot be commenting on pending cases or previous convictions as that could influence the outcome of the matter. If there is a pending case against him, we can’t speak about that now. We can only talk about that if we want to oppose bail and we bring that up or during aggravation of sentence if he has been convicted.”
The young girl, a final year Business Management student, had been raped and stabbed to death in her rented room in Mokomene, Botlokwa, two weeks ago. This crime caused a wave of indignation among South Africans and attracted the attention of country’s president Cyril Ramaphosa.
