Crayfishing gone bad: Freediver drowned at Betty’s Bay

When two friends went crayfishing on Sunday, none of them expected the day would be the last for one of them. A 43-year-old man from Bloubergstrand died while diving at Betty’s Bay near Cape Town.

According to National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon, in the afternoon, they received an alert from the deceased’s friend who had been waiting for his return in vain. The NSRI dispatched a sea rescue craft. Apart from that, the Overberg Fire and Rescue Services, the Western Cape government health emergency services, the police, a Western Province Surf Lifesaving lifeguard and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter responded.

The body was later noticed from the helicopter, floating just below the water surface. By the time it was retrieved to the shore, the paramedics could do nothing but declare the victim dead on the scene.

The police have opened an inquest docket.
