The bodies of a father and his 2-year-old daughter have been found one after another after an alleged murder-suicide. The 42-year-old man from Gweru drowned his daughter at the Insukamini Dam in Lower Gweru and then hanged himself on a tree on Monday.
The tragedy supposedly happened after the man, Lot Josiya of Woodlands Park in Gweru, had a misunderstanding with his girlfriend, the mother of the child, Prudence Josiya.
Midlands acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident saying that “the police in Gweru are investigating a case of sudden death, where a man committed suicide after he had drowned his two-year-old daughter, at Insukamini dam in Lower Gweru.”
It is understood that the man was visiting his girlfriend and their daughter that day. After the alleged dispute, he forcibly took the child and drove off to an unknown destination. He later sent a text message to the mother of the child informing her that he intended to drown himself and the child at the Insukamini Dam.
According to the police, the man’s body was found hanging from a tree the following day by a passerby.
When the police had arrived at the scene and a search was carried out they also discovered the toddler’s body floating in the dam while Josiya’s vehicle was found parked near the dam.
