Two Gauteng students took their own lives days before final exams

Two cases of suicide were reported by the Gauteng police department as two matric pupils had killed themselves in the run up to the final exams, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi’s office stated on Tuesday.

The Gauteng education department confirmed that the children from Phahama Secondary and Hoërskool Bekker had both committed suicide last week.

A 17-year-old girl from Phahama Secondary School hanged herself at home on Thursday, according to department spokesperson Steve Mabona.

“It is believed she lost her new cellphone and was too scared to tell her parents, hence took her own life,” Mabona said.

The second incident occurred on Sunday when a 19-year-old Grade 12 Hoërskool Bekker student supposedly turned the gun that belonged to his father on himself at home. Before doing so, the student left a suicide note which is now regarded as evidence in the police investigation.
