A prominent prosecutor was killed in a courtroom when a gun displayed as an exhibit was unintentionally discharged during an ongoing trial in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.
The incident has been confirmed by the KwaZulu-Natal director of public prosecutions, Elaine Zungu, who told the media that the advocate, Addelaid Ann Ferreira Watt, died at the age of 51.
According to Zungu, the gun fell and a shot rang out with the bullet hitting the advocate in her leg in what has been described as a “freak accident.”
“Her untimely passing is mourned by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. The family has requested that their privacy be respected,” Zungu said in the bereavement notice to the staff.
