Tongaat woman killed with hammer in front of her granddaughter

A 13-year-old girl became an eyewitness of her grandmother’s murder when an unknown man assaulted the 63-year-old woman with a hammer in Tongaat, north of Durban, on Monday.

“The 13-year-old girl who was found at the scene was questioned and she alleged that while she was hanging up her clothes she heard her grandmother screaming for help,” police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele confirmed.

When the girl came to the grandmother’s living room, she saw an unknown man attacking her grandmother with a hammer.

As she subsequently told the police, she had tried to fight back the man but he overpowered her, pushed her out of the room, and locked the door.

When the police crew called by the teen arrived at the Fairbreeze home, they found the woman showing no signs of life, lying in a pool of blood with blunt wounds to her head.

A case of premeditated murder has been opened at the Tongaat police station for investigation.
