2 rhinos and 2 zebras electrocuted in Pretoria

Four animals were killed after the overhead Eskom power lines collapsed at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Pretoria.

According to the City of Tshwane’s Environmental Affairs Department, the carcasses of two zebras and two rhinos, a mother with a calf, were found on Saturday morning.

“Normally the female is always pushing the calf in front to protect them but and I think that’s why they were so close to each other and the bodies touched and that’s why maybe they were both electrocuted at the same time when they were touching the wire, especially the mother as she was on the level of the wire,” MMC for Environmental Affairs Dana Wannenburg advised.

The investigation is under way; however, the pylon had probably fallen because of the strong wind.
