The man who raped and bludgeoned to death 19-year-old UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana has been sentenced to three life terms in prison.
On Friday morning, Luyanda Botha appeared in the Cape Town high court. Earlier, he pleaded guilty to the crimes.
“I am liable of my intentions, as I intended to rape and murder,” he confirmed.
Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe then gave him three life sentences (one for murder and two for two counts of rape) and five more years behind bars for defeating the ends of justice (to run concurrently). Botha will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.
