Multi-vehicle pile-up on Durban M7: at least 1 man dead

Three trucks and six light motor vehicles collided on the M7, west of Durban, on Wednesday morning. At least one of the victims has been pronounced dead on the scene.

The crash occurred near the Bellville off-ramp causing a tanker truck to catch fire. The blaze soon consumed the other vehicles involved in the accident.

According to Rescue Care paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, apart from one fatality, multiple injuries are registered. Netcare 911’s Shawn Herbst confirms that six victims were treated for moderate injuries, while two more had been seriously injured. Two aeromedical helicopters were sent to transport them to hospital.

Jamieson advised that all the necessary authorities, including the police, were on the scene investigating the possible accident causes. While they work, the M7 is to be closed. The motorists travelling in or out of the city between Durban and Pinetown are urged to take another route until further notice.
