University of Venda campus incident ended with death of man pelted with stones

In an alleged gang-assault that occurred on the University of Venda campus, a man died after being stoned to death in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, in the early hours of Friday.

The police launched a manhunt for the group of men responsible for the attack, which had taken place at around 1:30am not far from the university campus.

“Frantic calls” were received by the local police from the community members who reported the assault on a person by a gang, police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo advised.

“On arrival, police discovered the body of a man, who might be in his mid-twenties, with multiple injuries and [an] assortment of objects like stones and sticks next to him. The group had already dispersed. The deceased was wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and black Adidas socks without shoes,” he explained.

The police are working to establish the man’s identity as well as the motive for the killing.
