The Durban police believe the shocking murder of a man from Canelands was an act of mob justice as his mutilated body had been found lying on the street with his penis hacked off.
The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers reported they had discovered the male body in an informal settlement in Canelands near Verulam at around 11:30pm on Sunday.
The victim’s lifeless body was found lying face up on the ground. There were multiple lacerations on the man’s face and it seemed he had been repeatedly beaten, his penis had been removed, RUSA spokesman Prem Balram confirmed.
According to Balram, the man was later identified by his family as 31-year-old Mbuso Mgobhozi.
“According to residents, Mgobhozi was hacked to death by locals who believed he was one of the suspects responsible for the death of two brothers the night (Saturday) before. The brothers known as Sanele and Vusi were shot dead during a bar brawl… The man’s penis has not been located,” he explained.
