Mpumalanga matric couple nabbed for faking kidnapping and demanding R1m ransom

Two matric students have been arrested by the Mpumalanga police for faking a kidnapping and demanding a ransom of R1 million. The alleged offenders are in a relationship, both are in their 20s.

“Information at police’s disposal revealed that on October 10, 2019, a case of kidnapping was opened at Bushbuckridge police station, where one of the suspects, a 20-year-old Grade 12 learner was reported missing,” the police spokesperson stated. “After a missing person’s report was filed with the police, it is reported that her mother then received a cellphone message demanding the above-mentioned ransom.”

The law enforcement officials later found that the young man had used a different sim card in the girl’s mobile phone to send a message to her mother.

The pair are due to appear in a local court on Monday.
