15 more mortar bombs have been found and recovered by the Eastern Cape police in the Strelitzia Dam in Uitenhage.
The first three were found by the locals at the weekend. According to the specialists, all these mortars were live.
On Monday, the police with special deminers squad assistance discovered 15 more bombs what raised the total amount of recovered bombs in the dam to 18, spokesperson Brig Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed.
According to Capt Gerda Swart, the Port Elizabeth bomb squad has already deactivated them.
“As the dam’s level had fallen over the past few months and it was believed this could be the reason for the discoveries,” she explained.
An inquest docket has been opened. The police urge the community members not to handle or pick up anything that resembles a mortar bomb and immediately call the law-enforcers in case of such a discovery.
The authorities are now considering the possibility to close the dam and cordon off the area for the further search.
