Two of four siblings who lived in a village near Thohoyandou have been declared dead after they allegedly fell off a makeshift wooden bridge at the weekend, the provincial police reported.
The children were last seen alive while walking to a section of Muledane village on Saturday “when the eight-year-old girl slipped and fell from the bridge into a ditch below,” police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo stated.
“Her brother also jumped into the ditch, apparently trying to rescue his sister, but they both perished. The other two siblings ran home to raise the alarm,” Mojapelo advised.
The ditch under the bridge had been filled with water following the recent rains.
At this stage, it is unclear what exactly caused the deaths. Two possible reasons are drowning and physical injuries caused by the fall.
