A pupil of the Izibuko Primary School died after she had come under attack of a group of armed men in Katlehong on Wednesday afternoon, the Gauteng education department confirmed on Thursday. The girl had been hit by a stray bullet in her head and later passed away in hospital.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, a man and his wife were fetching their child who had just returned from a school trip when the shooting occurred.
“As they were collecting the child, a group of men in a minibus approached them and fired several shots at the man, who died at the scene. A 12-year-old as also shot by a stray bullet and he was rushed to hospital, where he later died,” Dlamini advised.
Dlamini says no one else was injured, but several cars were damaged.
The police have started a manhunt for the suspects.
