The Cape Town Metrorail service reported derailment of T3202 train which had been travelling on a route of the Northern Line in the early hours of Thursday morning. Twenty people were injured and later treated at Bellville station, the Metrorail representatives confirmed.
The CT outbound train went off the track at 06:08am on the Kuils River side of the station, the commuter rail service operator advised.
The first three carriages including the motor coach are off the rails.
Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott confirmed that twenty passengers had sustained minor injuries and had been treated on the scene. She said that the commuters would have to prepare for major delays on Wellington and Strand/Muldersvlei Lines due to the crash.
“Recovery of the derailed carriages and assessment of infrastructure is expected to take several hours and service status updates will continue to be posted to all regional passenger information channels,” Scott declared.
The Metrorail staff are working tirelessly to restore the rail traffic.
