One of the five men suspected of having stormed and robbed a jewellery store was shot and killed in a shootout with the police on Wednesday evening. The police arrested four others right after the alleged store heist at the Mall of Africa.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo’s statement, there was a large number of jewellery items, including Rolex, Breitling, Omega and Tag Heuer watches, confiscated during the detention. It is believed that the seized items were stolen from the shop by the culprits.
The robbery had been reported to the police at around 7:30pm and a response team immediately started a search.
Masondo confirmed the police had spotted the suspects travelling in their BMW X5 in Ebony Park, about 10km away from the Mall of Africa. The police had pursued the suspects to Marlboro Drive near Alexandra where they opened fire.
“The armed gang shot at the police when they were intercepted in Marlboro and police returned fire resulting in one suspect being fatally shot and four arrested on the spot,” Masondo advised.
The suspects are now to stand trial on a spate of charges including business robbery, attempted murder, possession of the stolen property, reckless and negligent driving, and possession of unlicensed firearm and rounds of ammunition.
