Caster Semenya, the three-time world 800m champion, has switched to soccer after a contract with JVW Football Club was signed.
“I am grateful for this opportunity, and I appreciate the love and support I already get from the team,” Semenya stated. “I am looking forward to this new journey, and hopefully, I can contribute as much as I can to the club.”
According to the Gauteng-based club, the athlete will make her debut next year, as the transfer window has already been closed. Semenya will not be registered for the 2019 SAFA Sasol League.
Semenya switched to soccer after the World Athletics Championships had barred her from defending her 800m title due to the implementation of the IAAF’s rules.
