The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) officers were chasing one of their own when he got caught under the truck wheels on Thursday. The former officer who had been pursued for allegedly trying to sell a police docket died being hit by a truck.
“Members of the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit received intelligence of a detective sergeant who, together with a security guard and civilian, was selling a Lenasia South police docket,” police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo stated on Friday.
Once the suspects noticed the ACU officers, the accomplices started to flee. But shortly after, the chase ended with a crash when the suspects’ vehicle hit a curb on the R588 and came to rest at a roadside. Despite the crash, the corrupt sergeant hadn’t given up trying and ran into the veld, chased by the ACU members. He then ran onto a highway but was struck by the truck.
“It is unfortunate that the officer lost his life during the process of arrest and I extend heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased member. However, it is also rather disconcerting when one receives reports of members allegedly engaging in corrupt activities,” National police commissioner General Khehla Sitole declared.
