Fire at Pietermaritzburg factory left 6 workers with CO poisoning

A factory incident affected six people after a fire had broken out at a factory on Willowton Road in the Pietermaritzburg CBD on Thursday afternoon. All the victims were hospitalised with suspected CO poisoning symptoms of various degrees.

A local fire and rescue service crew and the ER24 paramedics were at the accident scene working to eliminate the consequences of the blaze and to assist the victims.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, all the factory personnel had been evacuated.

“Paramedics assessed the patients while fire services battled the blaze. Assessments showed that six people had suffered from minor to mild smoke inhalation,” Meiring advised.

The affected workers were provided with first aid and then taken to hospital for further treatment.
