An angry mob have tracked down and set alight a man who had gone on the rampage killing two and severely injuring one more person in Ngwelezane near Empangeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.
“The suspect, who has been described as mentally challenged, began his stabbing frenzy at about 7:30am,” provincial police spokesperson Capt Nqobile Gwala claimed.
The first victim of the maniac is a 10-year-old pupil who was on her way to school with other pupils when the knife-wielding man approached the group of the school kids and attacked the girl. She had sustained 47 stab wounds and died of her injuries on the scene. The other kids escaped injuries.
The second person who fell victim to the knifeman appeared to be an elderly man. He also died after being stabbed several times.
After a while, the suspect had gone on the third killing but failed causing only severe injuries to the woman. She was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Once the local residents knew that the maniac was walking around the area, they gathered together and traced the killer and set him alight, causing his death.
At this stage, the Empangeni police are investigating one count of attempted murder, two counts of ruthless killings and the other one of the perpetrator.
