The death of a Newlands West ex-principal whose body was discovered on Monday, three days after her suspected murder, has rocked the community of KwaZulu-Natal.
79-year-old Shirley James, a former principal of Collengavale School in Overport, was found lying on her back with a piece of cloth wrapped around her face in her garage. The unnamed source reported that the officers had found the blood stains on the victim’s hand allegedly from a stab wound while assessing the alleged crime scene. The police believe James was attempting to fight her attackers off.
“It is alleged a body of a 79-year-old woman was found dead with assault wounds to the head. The victim was alone in her house. Charges of robbery and murder are being investigated,” KZN SAPS Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed.
However, the police are not rushing to conclusions. According to the initial investigation, the woman could have died any time between Thursday and Saturday as the officers who had responded to the scene spotted her body showing signs of decomposition.
A post-mortem is to determine the cause of death and the exact date when the woman was murdered.
