On Wednesday morning, a taxi driver and learners from various schools became the victims of a car crash involving two Quantum taxis colliding head-on in Klerksdorp. One of the two drivers reportedly died and five schoolkids were severely injured.
Elias Malindi, the education department spokesperson, confirmed that the pupils had been travelling to their different schools at the time of the accident. They were all in critical condition and were transported to Ancron and Tshepong hospitals in Klerksdorp.
Education MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela expressed shock at the incident and wished the learners a quick recovery, “so they could return to school in time for the upcoming examinations”.
The education department has arranged psychological counselling sessions for those affected by the accident.
