Man on trial for fraud in Joburg

A 48-year-old man was arrested by the police officers for corruption. He reportedly extorted a bribe from the JMPD officer who had allegedly assaulted him.

According to police spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, Christopher Bekwa was assaulted by the JMPD official. The officer was dismissed in October 2017.

During the process, Bekwa demanded a bribe of R9, 000 from the official for him not to testify.

Bekwa was detained by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in October 2018.

He was sentenced to a fine of R5, 000 or five years imprisonment by the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court. He was also declared unable to possess a firearm.
