Tuesday’s accident almost cost Underberg schoolchildren lives

A morning accident involving a bus carrying schoolchildren has almost taken away their lives when the driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and it veered off the road near Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday morning. The bus overturned injuring seventy-two children, two of them critically.

The bus was travelling along Centocow Road when the accident happened. Two kids were taken to the nearby St Apollinaris Hospital for the appropriate treatment, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring confirmed.

“Medics found two children in a critical condition, while the others sustained minor to moderate injuries. The children were treated for their injuries and the critically injured provided with advanced life-support interventions,” Meiring explained.

One of the two critically injured kids had to be airlifted to hospital by a private medical helicopter. The others had been treated on the scene and then transported by various services to the nearby hospitals.

Meiring says details surrounding the incident were unknown, but the local authorities were investigating on the scene.
