It is supposed that the unfair treatment by the Free State traffic officials had compelled the Bloemfontein taxi drivers to go on strike this week.
The tense situation between the police and the protesters became even more acute after the police officers had been attacked with rocks forcing them to respond by opening fire at the strikers.
The local authorities urge the bus and taxi drivers to engage in a dialogue as thousands of people have been left stranded without passenger services. The taxi drivers are even reported to take people out of metered taxis.
One of the challenges mentioned as the reason for the displeased drivers is the route distribution. An acceptable solution should be found for the bus routes as the interstate bus has been allegedly scavenging the routes of taxis.
