Three suspects made their appearance in the East London Regional Court. They were suspected of cash-in-transit robbery.
According to Hawks spokesperson Cpt Anelisa Ngcakani, the suspects, aged between 33 and 41, appeared in court on Friday.
It is reported that, on September 17, 2016, six suspects attacked the security company members who were offloading money from the vehicle. The armed men then went to the bank and locked the staff and the security members in the bank vault. The perpetrators stole R1.6 million.
During the investigation, the Hawks officers traced the suspects’ vehicle and identified its owner.
Zukile Vimbela, 41, was arrested on the same day.
Two other suspects, Mfana Selby Gomba, 33, and Bulelani Luningo, 37, were detained by the SAPS officers in Gugulethu two days after the crime had been committed.
Vimbela was sentenced to 10 years, Gomba was sentenced to 45 years. Luningo was sentenced to 55 years behind bars.
