High levels of crime, poverty and unemployment have forced the Cape Town residents in Blikkiesdorp to embark on a protest action in Delft on Friday.
The protest turned into a large-scale riot when the residents, in an attempt to draw the authorities’ attention, started to burn tyres and stone the police vehicles. The action station commander of the Delft police personal vehicle was one of those to be stoned, the police confirmed.
“The acting commander was en route to the station when he was also notified about the protest and when he arrived, his personal vehicle was stoned,” Delft Community Policing Forum chairperson Charles George confirmed. “Soldiers arrived in the area to monitor the situation.”
There are just over 300 people who had taken to the streets this morning.
