The University of KwaZulu-Natal Westville campus has collapsed into chaos when a hundred students started burning furniture and debris.
They allegedly protest against academic exclusion and problems with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
According to Ashton Bodrick, the executive director for corporate relations, the lectures were disrupted by the protesters.
“Approximately 100 students have gathered in the quad,” he confirmed. “They wish to hand over a memorandum outlining their grievances to the university management. Please be aware that there may be disruptions on the Westville campus today.”
There is a voice note making rounds on social media threatening that the protests will continue.
“Tomorrow we are protesting until further notice, if you attend a tut, prac or class we will fetch you and burn you,” a male voice is heard saying.
Bodrick advised that the situation was closely monitored by the risk management services and the public order policing personnel.
