Rustenburg taxi driver faces trial after being accused of illegal firearm possession

The Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court brought charges of illicit possession of firearm and ammunition against a 32-year-old taxi driver on Wednesday.

The North West police apprehended John Kgaogelo Motllhamme on Monday night when the police, acting on a tip-off, carried out a search at a house in Sunrise Park.

Once the police officers had arrived at the suspect’s house, they found the man in possession of an unlicensed rifle and ammunition. The members of a special squad retrieved another pistol with ammunition from under the suspect’s pillow, but he had a valid license for this weapon.

According to police Captain Aafje Botma, a white Iveco Sprinter, parked outside the house, had also been searched and, as a result, a pistol and a magazine under the seat of the vehicle were found.

The trial will be resumed on July 22. The detainee will be allowed to apply for bail.
