Police arrest five for murder of farmer and wife in Free State

The police officers have arrested five men who had allegedly murdered a man and his wife at their farm in Free State.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Sam Makhele, Isak van den Berg, the 67-year-old farmer, and his spouse Ina, 61, were tied up, beat and shot dead on the Bloubos farm.

“Mr Van den Berg left to take a worker back to town, leaving his wife at home. On the way back to the farm, he stopped to open his farm gate and was overpowered by six suspects. He was then taken back to his house where together with his wife he was tied up, brutally beaten and shot. Both died at the scene,” Makhele said.

The suspects fled the scene with stolen goods, including a firearm, in the deceased’s vehicle.

During the arrest, the officers recovered the firearms.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
