Former soccer star Marc Batchelor gunned down metres away from his house

Marc Batchelor, a retired soccer player, has been shot dead near his house in Olivedale, Randburg.

Former Chiefs, Pirates, and Sundowns striker received a fatal bullet when he attempted to park the white BMW X5, the reports stated.

Police spokesperson Col Lungelo Dlamini said two men on a motorcycle had approached Batchelor’s car after 6pm and opened fire “before the man could drive into his premises”. The circumstances around the case are still sketchy as the law-enforcement services attempt to gather more information.

No arrests have been made at this stage, Dlamini added.

While the investigation is under way, the colleagues of the footballer have started to send their condolences to his family and relatives.

“He was a player who was always looking forward to the next training session. He wanted to win, and losing was not part of his vocabulary,” Steve Lekoelea, who played with Batchelor at Pirates, said. “He wanted to perfect his game and he was a team player. I’m devastated by his passing away.”
