Remorseful Roodepoort man turned himself in after attacking pastor

An incident in which a Roodepoort resident assaulted an EFF cap-wearing pastor from Johannesburg was captured on CCTV at a petrol station last Friday. After a while, the attacker turned himself in when the video had gone viral on the social media.

The video shows the man swiftly approaching the pastor’s vehicle and punching him in his face through an open window. The incident occurred after the pastor, Ron Rambebu, had just filled his car with fuel and started to drive off from the Engen petrol station in Kingfisher Road in Horizon Park.

It is said that one bystander who had witnessed the attack approached Rambebu with the information identifying the offender. She mentioned the man usually visited a pub in Honeydew to meet his friends. Rambebu contacted the police with this description.

“He handed himself over to the police this morning and is detained at the Roodepoort police station,” police spokesperson Kay Makhubele confirmed.

Charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm will be laid against the man at the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court next week.
