‘Mysterious’ disappearance of livestock raised for correctional facilities in EC

Eastern Cape correctional services department initiated an internal investigation as almost 5,000 chickens and dozens of pigs raised to feed the prison population in a number of correctional facilities in the province had been declared missing. Over 10,000 prisoners in EC are left without adequate nutrition.

It is reported that all the chickens have disappeared from St Albans prison’s poultry project in Port Elizabeth, whilst Middledrift prison’s piggery project has ‘missed’ their livestock and a tractor.

“Several cases of theft” have been reported to the police by the provincial prison authorities,” the Eastern Cape department of correctional services and the national correctional services department stated.

The national department has also opened a case suspecting St Albans prison and Middledrift prison’s staff of theft.
