An innocent bystander was shot and killed by a police officer on February 18, 2017. On Tuesday, the high court in Johannesburg found the Ekurhuleni metro police department officer guilty of murder.
Vusi Myeni, 43, was pursuing other suspects when he fired at their car and missed. The bullet struck Sthembiso Tshabalala, 33, an innocent bystander, in the chest. The paramedics declared him dead on the scene.
After killing the man, Myeni left the scene and handed in his gun at Tembisa police station. He was later found in Arwyp hospital in Kempton Park.
According to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Moses Dlamini, Myeni is to be sentenced in the Johannesburg high court on July 8.
