A group of unknown men entered a farm territory near Piet Retief in Mpumalanga and assaulted its landowner while he was at work in a field. His dead body was found next to a tractor at the plantation.
His relatives pronounced him missing on Tuesday. The farmer was last seen alive on his farm Waaihoek on Saturday when he and two workers left with a tractor and a trailer to collect firewood .
The police searched the plantation trying to find the farmer. It took a little while to discover his body not far from his residence.
Police spokesperson Col Mtsholi Bhembe said on Thursday that a preliminary probe suggested that the farmer had been struck repeatedly with a sharp object as he had cuts to his head, body and arms.
After the alleged murder, two of the farm workers believed to be from Eswatini (Swaziland) have gone missing along with the farmer’s personal firearm that was stored in the farmhouse. The employees’ identities are to be established.
