Bloemfontein hit-and-run victim “grateful to be alive”

A motorcycle-bakkie crash was reported after a hit-and-run suspect rammed the biker at the Nelson Mandela drive intersection sending him to hospital on Sunday.

“Pieterse was at the Nelson Mandela Drive intersection in Westdene at around 01:05 when an Isuzu bakkie smashed into him, sending him and the motorbike flying,” the police officials stated.

The hit-and-run driver then escaped the scene without providing any initial assistance to the victim who had sustained multiple head, chest, and leg injuries.

The paramedics took the biker to Mediclinic in critical condition but, after a brief assessment, he was transferred to Pelonomi Hospital for a proper medical care.

“I am all right, it is just my jaw that is a bit sore,” Pieterse reportedly said when he fully regained consciousness on Wednesday, adding that he was “grateful to be alive.”

A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened by the police. The suspect is still on the run.
