The police have urged the homeless of Pretoria to stay vigilant after three similar murders were committed in the area.
Within the two past weeks, three homeless middle aged men were found dead in Muckleneuk. The latest was discovered in Magnolia Park on Sunday.
“While the most recent discovery was the second at Magnolia [Dell] Park on consecutive days, the first dead body of a homeless man was found at a veld near Mears Park train station, also in Muckleneuk, two Saturdays ago,” police spokesperson Capt Daniel Mavimbela confirmed.
All victims were reportedly killed in their sleep in the same manner. However, the police are not yet ready to consider a serial killer responsible for these crimes.
“Though the deceased were found to have suffered at least blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds to the upper body, the motive behind the killings and the identities of the deceased remain a subject of investigations,” Mavimbela explained.
A manhunt has been launched by Sunnyside police. Forensic experts, informers and intelligence networks are employed to find the perpertrator.
“We are also patrolling areas that are frequented by homeless people to ensure we heighten awareness among them,” Mavimbela added.
A representative of an NGO, who works closely with homeless people in Pretoria, stated that even more of them had reported being attacked in a similar way, but managed to escape.
“They’ve been reporting violence towards them. We spoke to a guy three weeks ago who was sleeping when he was stabbed. He woke up and got away, luckily, and he’s still alive,” he said asking not to mention his name.
According to the statistics, around 6,000 people in Pretoria are considered homeless.
