One of the victims affected by the crash outside Mohlatlego Machaba Secondary School in GaMotupa in Bolobedu, outside Tzaneen, has lost his leg. The surgeons had to amputate it due to the extent of injuries the 14-year-old boy had sustained.
“The learner is still in hospital where he is recovering. And we wish him a speedy recovery,” Limpopo education department spokesperson Sam Makondo stated.
According to Makondo, all eight survivors and their families are getting assistance from a specially assigned psychosocial support system team.
“The MEC has instructed the team to visit the affected families, particularly pupils, until they cope with their academic work. We are getting a progress report from time to time and we are grateful that there are positive strides,” he confimed.
Koketso Rahlane, a 14-year-old grade 8 pupil, who was killed in the accident, is said to be buried on Saturday.
In the meantime, the police are investigating a case of culpable homicide against the pupil who was driving the bakkie without a licence. He will face court tomorrow along with his father, the owner of the car.
