The members of a hiking group did their best to revive an 80-year-old hiker who had collapsed while on route on Cecilia Ridge, the slope west of the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden.
The hiker’s group tried to perform a cardiopulmonary resuscitation but all their efforts failed. The man, a local resident, died on the scene.
One of the group members called the Peninsula Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) at 11;27am on Tuesday and asked for immediate assistance.
“The Metro Medical Rescue technicians and logistical support crew responded to Constantia Nek in order to access the back table area via the Bridle Path management road,” the WSAR said.
“When the medical team arrived at the scene, they found an 80-year-old local resident had been receiving first aid and CPR assistance from members of his party,” they added.
A Metro Rescue 4×4 vehicle was dispatched to the scene in order to transport the deceased down the mountain and hand over his body to an awaiting Forensic Pathology Services team.
