Yesterday, two children died at an illegally run pre-school centre in Westdene, Johannesburg. They allegedly ate rat poison.
“The postmortem shows that it was poison that killed the children,” police spokesman Captain Jerbes de Bruyn confirmed. “An inquest case was register with Sophiatown SAPS, and it is being investigated.”
However, the exact name of the poison will only be known after a toxic report is ready.
“It is alleged that the two pre-school learners were under the care and supervision of a privately run pre-school without the necessary permits to do so,” Mpho Phalatse, a member of the mayoral committee responsible for health and social development, claimed.
Phalatse is planning to visit the deceased children’s families today “to get to the bottom” of the incident. Her colleagues and other officials from the city’s child desk, environmental health, the emergency management services and local ward councilors with social workers are to accompany her.
It is also reported that several more pre-schools operate illegally in the area.
