The suspect who allegedly hacked a couple in their fifties to death in Greenfields, Bethelsdorp, is at large. The police discovered their mutilated bodies in their house 20km outside Port Elizabeth on Monday.
The victims were identified by the police as Sonwabo Nquma, 52, and his girlfriend, Nomvuyo Nelson, 56. As per police officers, the victims were found with multiple open wounds to their heads. Nquma’s body was partly burnt and his limbs were tied. Nelson’s body was naked.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, the friend came to the couple’s house in Emantshilibeni Street at about 16:30 on Monday. He failed to reach them on the phone and decided to check if everything was fine with them. He told the police that he “kicked open the door and found the couple brutally murdered lying on the floor”.
The suspects ransacked the house but it is not clear yet if anything was stolen. A murder weapon was found near one of the bodies.
A case of double murder is under police investigation. The motive is yet to be established.
