“Never underestimate the power of prayer,” police spokesperson Capt Xoli Mbele thanked God after two armed men were detained by the officers on Wednesday after an attempted robbery.
It became known that two suspects, aged 22 and 38, were trying to rob two other people who were on their way home after an evening sermon on the corner of Von Wielligh and Jeppe streets in downtown Johannesburg.
“The victims were coming from church on their way home when they were confronted by the suspects. One of them pointed a firearm and they took their bags. But while trying to run away the suspects were cornered by police. The firearm they used and the victims’ bags were recovered,” Mbele confirmed.
The seized firearms turned out to be toy guns.
The suspects are detained until their court appearance, which has been scheduled for May 24, 2019, by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
